How can I unclog a drainage waste vent?
Step 1 — Check if the vent is damaged
If your drains aren't working properly, there might be a problem with the vent. This system lets air push waste through pipes. When the drain gets clogged, they stop working. Sometimes a clog is actually just a damaged vent pipe. The roof has pipes sticking out. Wind, branches, or ice can break the PVC pipe. Before removing a blockage, make sure the pipe is still solid.
Step 2 — Place Ladder Against Building
Use a ladder to place it against the building where you will work on the drainage pipe. Make sure the ladder is stable and someone is holding the bottom when you climb up.
Step 3 — Position Roof Ladder
If the roof has a steep slope, it is necessary to utilize a roof ladder in order to work safely without fear of falling. Before you climb the roof, tie a rope to the top rung of the roof ladder. Lift the roof leader up and lay it flat. Put it near the vent, and you can walk up the slope and work from the ladder.
Step 4 — Look into Vent
When you get to the drain, use a flashlight to see what's causing the blockage. Sometimes it's a nest or something close to the top. If you have a small garden tool, you can take it out.
Step 5 — Use a Plumber's Snake
If you can't see anything near the top or if the clog is too big to reach, use a drain snake. A strong cable attachment will help remove the clog.
